The Nickel Masonic Lodge of Sudbury is hosting an open house for prospective new members on Feb. 25.

The temple is located at 845 Regent Street. The open house begins at 3 p.m.

Nickel Masonic Lodge is one of the oldest Masonic Lodges in Ontario,” the group said in a news release. “It was formed in 1892 and is as old as the old City of Sudbury itself. The founding ‘master’ was Dr. William Howey, (who was among) the first pioneers and first medical doctor to move to Sudbury Junction – later to become the City of Sudbury.”

Light Refreshments will be available. Free parking available.

The Masons are involved in several local charitable activities, including:

  • MASONICh.I.P. (free Child Identification Program)
  • Winter Clothing Drive (to support the red coats downtown)
  • Tough Times Dinner (all proceeds were given to the Sudbury Foodbank)
  • Road Clean up
  • MCTV Lions Telethon
  • Supporting the 4H club at Westmount Garden
  • Supplying a yearly bursary to students at Cambrian College
  • Holding events to raise money for various groups in the community

Membership to the Masons is open to males over the age of 21. Women who are interested in joining the club can join the Order of the Eastern Star, a Masonic appendant body.

“Everyone is welcome into Freemasonry regardless of their religion, race or creed,” Worshipful Master Angus Morris told Sudbury.com. “We are a group of like-minded men who continuously strive to make ourselves better for our families, friends and communities."
