A North Shore Search and Rescue truck can be seen parked on the side of Panache Lake Road on Feb. 2 as part of search efforts to locate Ward 2 Coun. Michael Vagnini.

Now missing for nine days, the search for Ward 2 Coun. Michael Vagnini continues in Sudbury.

There is no word on his fate.

As reported on Friday, Greater Sudbury Police along with North Shore Search and Rescue began conducting an active grid search in remote areas along Old Highway 17 and in the McCharles Lake Road and Panache Lake Road areas.

Today, GSPS spokesperson, Kaitlyn Dunn, told Sudbury.com the searches generated no new information.

“Based on the results of the OPP helicopter search the ground search through our search and rescue team and the North Shore Search and rescue no new information came to light in the search for Michael Vagnini,” she said.

Vagnini, 62, was last seen Jan. 27 driving a black 2021 Ram 1500 truck with Ontario licence plate BK 22178. It has a broken passenger side tail light.

Vagnini was last seen wearing a bright yellow hooded sweater, green pants and black running shoes. Earlier in the day, he was seen wearing an Erie Otters jersey over top of the yellow hooded sweater. He does not have his phone with him.

With private citizens conducting their own parallel searches to the official searches being conducted by police, Sudbury.com asked about these efforts, mostly generating from a Facebook group called Michael Vagnini Volunteer Search Group, and if police had any issues with these search efforts in terms of safety or logistics.

Dunn said GSPS has no concerns about these search groups, other than their personal safety.

“I think the media release that was sent out on Friday covered the stuff for the community,” she said. “Just, if you’re going to do it tell people where you are going, stay off the ice, things like that.”

Sudbury.com reported the contents of that release here.

“We’re still asking the community to be on the lookout for both his vehicle and him and anyone with information who has not spoken to a police officer yet is asked to contact police,” said Dunn.

GSPS have a dedicated tip line at 705-675-9171 Ext. 2320. Detectives are looking to gather additional information regarding conversations prior to Vagnini going missing.
