Summer's Best kicks off today:

Funeral for John Rodriguez set for July 11:

Family members, friends and likely a significant number of dignitaries will be on hand next week at the funeral for John Rodriguez. The former Nickel Belt MP and mayor, who famously described himself as the "bus driver" of city hall, passed away at his home on July 5 after a long bout with a respiratory illness. Sudbury.com has learned that a funeral mass for Rodriguez will be held on July 11 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Walford Road. Visitation is scheduled for July 10 at the Lougheed Funeral Home on Regent Street. Visitations times are 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. that day.

OPP investigating mysterious death in Spanish:

At around noon on July 4, OPP officers were called to the small community of Spanish after a man was found unresponsive outside a residence. Officers from the from Manitoulin and East Algoma detachments, as well as members of the Emergency Response Team unit, were called out to the scene. The OPP is not releasing the man's name at this time. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for today to determine the cause of death. It is being conducted by the Office of the Chief Coroner-Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) in Sudbury. If you have information on this crime, the OPP ask that you phone 1-888-310-1122.

Sudbury slips down the rankings in best places to live:

The rankings are in and Greater Sudbury placed 169 on the Canada's Best Places to Live list of 2017. This was a steep drop off for the Nickel City, as Sudbury placed 84th in Canada on the 2016 edition of the list. The annual list, compiled by MacLean's magazine takes into account a variety of factors including, robust economy, high wealth and income, home affordability, low taxes, transit friendly, and more. Celebrate 20 years of LGBTQ+ Pride in the North:

Greater Sudbury's annual Pride Week, a celebration of the city's queer community, takes place July 10-16. This will be the 20th anniversary of Pride Week in Sudbury — with LGBTQ2SIAAP events having been organized in the city since 1997. The organization behind Pride celebrations, Fierté Sudbury Pride, has a full slate of events planned to mark the milestone anniversary. Festivities get underway July 10 with the official Pride flag raising ceremony at the James Jerome Sports Complex at 11 a.m.

Residents who have not already completed the Greater Sudbury Transit Action Plan survey still have time to participate and help transform the local public transit system. The Greater Sudbury Transit Action Plan survey is available online and on paper at the Greater Sudbury Public Library and the Downtown Transit Terminal until midnight on Sunday, July 9. The Transit Action Plan is a comprehensive review across all transit services in Greater Sudbury with a focus on identifying key ways the system can achieve “Better Routes. Better Schedules. Rock Solid Wrestling kicks off Italian Festival:

Sudbury wrestling enthusiasts packed into the Caruso Club on July 6 for the unofficial kick off of the 45th annual Italian Festival, hosted by the Societa Caruso. A number of roster members of Rock Solid Wrestling were in the house for Vendetta 8, to square off and entertain the crowd. Check out some photos of the action here and be sure to check out what's happening this weekend at the Italian Festival.
