The 10th annual Defeat Depression event, hosted by the Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA) is set to go May 27 in Bell Park.

In a news release, NISA stated the pandemic has resulted in an increase in anxiety and depression in Canadians, “with depression predicted to be the leading cause of disability by the World Health Organization.” The psychological impacts of the pandemic aside, the COVID-19 shutdown hindered  fundraising efforts for non-profits and charitable organizations, many of which still haven’t recovered. Throughout the pandemic, NISA noticed an increased need for community mental health services, and the need is only increasing.

Martin Boucher, executive director of NISA, said the funds and awareness raised at events like Defeat Depression ensure not only that people can seek help, but also that they know where to find that help. “The funds raised this year will allow us to meet the needs of peers in our community, and support Sudburians who are experiencing mental health challenges,” Boucher said.

The May 27 event will begin at Grace Hartman Amphitheatre in Bell Park. Registrations will start at 9:30 a.m., with the walk/run to follow at 10:30 a.m.

Defeat Depression is a national mental health awareness and fundraising initiative of the Mood Disorders Society of Canada. The fundraising goal for this year is $50,000, with proceeds going directly to the NISA.

NISA is a peer-support organization run by and for people with lived experience of mental health challenges/mental illness. From now until May 27, NISA will be organizing a variety of mini-fundraisers and registration campaigns to help us reach our goal. New this year, you may see canvassers visiting your neighbourhoods to share about the event.

If you are a student and interested in volunteering, we are accepting volunteers and can provide volunteer hours. The current focus is on increasing the number of teams and participants, and also in securing donations and sponsorships.
