No power Christmas Eve for 8,000 local Hydro One customers

As of 9:30 p.m. Christmas Eve, Hydro One said it had restored power to more than 49,300 customers following the Dec. 24 windstorm, which caused extensive damage to its distribution system across northern and central Ontario.

Crews continue to respond to 338 incidents affecting over 47,600 customers.

"This violent wind storm caused widespread damage in communities across Ontario as many were starting to prepare to celebrate the holidays," said Jon Rebick, Vice President, Lines and Forestry, Hydro One, in a press release.

"Our lines and forestry crews are working as quickly and safely as possible and we appreciate our customers' patience."

As of last night, there were 8,000 customers who didn't yet have power in the Sudbury area alone, and 4,000 who potentially could remain without power until Dec. 26.

Close to 50,000 Hydro One customers in Northeast Ontario lost power due to high winds early this morning.

Hydro One has reported a total of 226 incidents of power loss across eight zones, with 58 occuring here in Sudbury, affecting 10,199 customers.

Crews are working on restoration efforts and plans are underway to move crews to the heavily affected areas. It is expected that there will be thousands of customers interrupted overnight.

Timmins was hit hard by the winds and had the highest number of customers without power with 14,265, caused by 32 incidents.

Others zones affected are as follows:

Algoma – 43 incidents (4,318 customers)
Kapuskasing – 10 incidents (218 customers)
Kirkland Lake – 13 incidents (2,268 customers)
Manitoulin – 9 incidents (304 customers)
New Liskeard – 16 incidents (4,917 customers)
Nipissing – 45 incidents (13,054 customers)

Hydro One reminds all members of the public to always stay clear of downed power lines or equipment. Never assume they are safe to approach.
