One of Northern Ontario's most famous gold mines is being permanently closed.

Goldcorp Inc. announced Jan. 14 that it will permanently cease underground mining activities at its Dome mine, part of the company’s Porcupine Gold Mines in Timmins, around this summer.

The mine was one of the Porcupine district’s most prolific and longest-running gold producers. The deposit was discovered in 1909 and went into operation the next year.

After being put on care and maintenance in 2004, the mine was reopened in 2006.

The closure of the Dome Mine means 115 employees and 76 contractors will be looking for work.

Mining operations at Porcupine’s Hollinger open pit, Hoyle Pond underground mine and processing plant will be optimized in order to sustain profitable production and are expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

In 2014, gold production from the Porcupine mines totaled 300,000 ounces of gold.

At more than 100 years, Dome Mine is North America's longest-operating gold mine.
