NOSM University, formerly known as the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, has made the list of the "top 10 cheap medical schools" in Canada, according to the website NYSCInfo.
Before anyone connects the word "cheap" with anything of a negative note, the website said the information is from a list of "the 15 Most Affordable Medical Schools in Canada, which includes some of the highest ranked schools in the globe."
NYSCInfo is a website and blog that provides information for Nigerian students seeking jobs and international scholarships, among other pursuits.
In the listing of the affordable medical school the website said international students might be drawn to the inexpensive cost of attending some schools of higher education in Canada.
"Whatever the case may be, the list above includes several extremely high-ranking universities in Canada, as well as some very economical medical schools in Canada," said the website.
Of the "top 10" on the list, NOSM University with campuses in Sudbury and Thunder Bay, is listed as ninth. McGill University's faculty of medicine, the oldest medical school in Canada, is listed as 10th.
Other schools on the list include McMaster University in Hamilton, the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario.
The website advises students that there are no free tuitions for foreign students in Canada seeking to get a higher level of education. The website said while tuition is not free, it is inexpensive.
The NYSCInfo website also provides general career advice, along with information on international scholarships.
At NOSM University, the official NOSM website has a page outlining the schedule of tuition fees for the MD program undergraduate medical education, which is roughly $24,000 per year for domestic students. International student fees are not listed on NOSM’s website.
For graduate studies, Master’s of Medical Studies (MMS), the webpage shows tuitions ranging from roughly $12,000 for Canadian students to roughly $35,000 for international students.
The NOSM University website also has information from the Office of Financial Aid that provides detailed information on how students can apply for student aid, apply for bursaries, seek financial wellness and how to deal with being in debt.
NOSM also advises "the estimated total cost for the first year of schooling at the NOSM University for 2021-22 for a single student with no dependents is approximately $65,000. This total includes tuition, ancillary fees, books, equipment, etc. plus living expenses."
The Financial Aid page also has detailed information on how students can minimize the impact of their education expenses by applying for various government grants and stipends.
