Two nurses employed with Health Sciences North (HSN) were honoured for their community service at this year’s Greater Sudbury Police Services Board Annual Awards Banquet.

Jill Riva-Patey received a Police Assistance Award for her efforts to help victims of a multi-vehicle collision in the McCrae Heights section of Greater Sudbury in April of 2011.

Riva-Patey provided first aid and triage to the victims of the collision and ensured bystanders remained out of harm’s way until emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

Debbie Casera received her Police Assistance Award for helping the victim of a motor vehicle incident in May of 2011, after the vehicle left the roadway and rolled over in a ditch.

Jill Riva-Patey is a registered nurse who is the manager of CQI, Risk Management and Special Projects in the Mental Health and Addictions Program at HSN. She has been a nurse at HSN for 20 years.

Debbie Casera is a registered nurse and the clinical leader of the functional assessment and outcome unit at the Sudbury Outpatient Centre of HSN. She has worked at HSN for 32 years.

“We’re very proud of Jill and Debbie,” David McNeil, chief nursing officer and vice-president of clinical programs at HSN, said in a press release.

“They are excellent nurses and their actions during those times of trauma demonstrate the kind of people they are, their professionalism, and the care and concern they have for people in crisis.”
