Andrew Olivier, who's running as an independent candidate in the Feb. 5 byelection, is holding a press conference today “regarding the future of his campaign.”

Olivier originally sought the Liberal nomination in the Sudbury riding, but on Dec. 15 surprised everyone by dropping out of the race, saying he'd been asked to step down quietly in favour of a another, hand-picked candidate.

Olivier also alleged that local Liberal Gerry Lougheed Jr., Liberal strategist Pat Sorbara and Premier Kathleen Wynne all contacted him and promised him a government job or appointment for staying quiet about the reasons for his withdrawl.

The OPP were asked to look into the allegations. Police announced this week that, based on its investigation, there was nothing to Olivier's assertions.

A Toronto Star poll released today had Olivier with one per cent of support. That poll has Suzanne Shawbonquit and the NDP have a slight lead at 42 per cent, with Glenn Thibeault and the Liberals close behind at 40 per cent and Paula Peroni for the Conservatives at 13 points.
