OPP officer seriously injured in Peel region traffic stop

12 p.m. Update:

OPP HSD Sgt. Kerry Schmidt has identified the officer involved and says the injured officer will be okay. 

Peel Police are investigating an incident during a traffic stop involving an OPP officer around 9 a.m. on Highway 10 at Highway 403 in Mississauga. 

The injured officer has been identified as Const. Patrick Chatelain, a 4-year member of the OPP Port Credit Detachment.

"He was taken to hospital. Apparently his injuries are minor. He should make a full recovery. The investigation is ongoing," said Schmidt. 

"At this point the officer is in hospital but I do hope he'll be released sometime this afternoon. His injuries are relatively minor but none the less very scary for him and everyone responding to this."

Police are still searching for a suspect vehicle charcoal grey Chrysler 300 with black rims and Quebec license plate FLK8756.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Peel Police.

Original story 10 a.m.: 

An OPP officer has been taken to a trauma centre in serious condition as a result of a traffic stop on Hurontario and the 403.

The suspect vehicle fled the area, according to police. 

OPP are looking for a charcoal grey Chrysler 300 with black rims and Quebec license plate FLK8756.

Peel Police is assisting OPP with road closures in the area of the incident and OPP is requesting the public's assistance to locate the vehicle.

Hurontario and the 403 westbound off ramp to Hurontario and eastbound on the ramp to southbound Hurontario are closed. 

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The officer is a member of the OPP Highway Safety Division.  The officer's name has not yet been released.
