The 20th annual Parkinson SuperWalk takes place this Saturday, Sept. 11.

The walk is organized by the Parkinson Society's central and northern Ontario regions, and raises funds and awareness about Parkinson's Disease.

Walkers can meet at Delki Dozzi Park at 3 Mary St. Registration for the walk starts at 10 a.m., with the walk itself starting at 11 a.m.

About 100,000 Canadians are affected by the disease, and it affects around 400,000 family members. The disease affects the brain, and breaks down motor control. It causes tremors, slowness, stiffness, and balance problems. Over time, increased fatigue, loss of sense of smell, difficulties with speech and writing, various sleep disorders, depression and cognitive difficulties may develop.

Michael J. Fox and the late Pope Jean Paul II are two individuals who made their struggle with the disease public.

There is currently no known cure for the disease.
