The province has awarded Pioneer Construction a $16.8 million contract to expand Highway 69.

Eleven kilometres of highway will be paved, from Trout Lake Road near Estaire to Highway 537. The project is slated to begin in April.

Together with the nine-kilometre section nearing completion north of Highway 537, drivers will be able to travel on an entirely new four-lane 20-kilometre section of highway between Sudbury and Estaire this fall.

Since 2003 the province has provided more than $365 million towards the expansion of Highway 69 between Sudbury and Parry Sound, according to a press release.

As a result of the government's strategic investments to date, the Highway 69 project remains on track for 2017.

"Providing Sudbury and other communities throughout our region with efficient transportation infrastructure encourages economic growth by creating jobs in the short term and building a foundation for development in the future," said Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci. "The investments we are making in our infrastructure today will help build a stronger future for Sudbury and Northern Ontario."
