Paws-ing for a cause

The OSCPA is once again 'paws-ing' to help replenish its bank account.

On Sept. 9, the community is invited to walk alongside the organization during their Friends For Life – Paws for a Cause walkathon.

Linda Morgan, chair of the walk, said the trek around Bell Park typically brings out about 150 people and pets.

In order to participate, walkers are asked to collect pledges so the SPCA can continue to do their work within the community.

“All money stays in Sudbury,” Morgan said. “It pays for the care of the animals we have in our branch.”

At any given time, there can be as many as 100 animals at the Notre Dame SPCA shelter, waiting for homes. This doesn't include animals in foster care or large animals like horses kept at farms. Morgan said the bills for caring for these animals add up quite quickly.

“It's very expensive,” she said.

The SPCA is the only organization locally mandated by law to conduct animal cruelty investigations, Morgan said.

That means the SPCA is often tasked with taking care of critters that need vet care, rehabilitation and lots of love in order to survive and thrive.
