Paula Peroni has announced she will be seeking the nomination for the Ontario PC's Sudbury riding in the upcoming byelection, triggered by Joe Ciminio's sudden resignation three weeks ago.

A school board trustee and sometime chair since 1997, now retired, Peroni has worked with the provincial and national levels of government in her role as president of both the Ontario and Canadian Trustee Associations.

She has had the ongoing support of MPPs Vic Fedeli, Lisa MacLeod and Garfield Dunlop, to name a few, and is looking forward to working more closely with them on behalf of Sudbury residents.

“Education is the natural conduit to both health and employment, so we can never become complacent about education”, Peroni said in a news release. “The Sudbury riding has the ability to define what the North needs in all of those aspects.

“With the vision and innovation in this community, we will show the rest of the province and the country that we are open for business, that we deserve their investment and that we will have sound and responsible processes in place to protect and sustain our resources.”

Peroni said she believes it’s time to do politics in a different way and she is prepared to do just that.

“If an idea works well for Sudbury and benefits the people that I represent, then I don’t care who brings it to the table, let’s do it.”

Referring to Cimino's resignation (and the $58,000 in severance to which he's entitled, but will not be claiming), Peroni said, if elected, her first piece of business will be closing “the loophole that allows rookie MPPs who walk away in their first term such a large windfall of the taxpayers dollars.”

The Sudbury Ontario PC Association has scheduled the nomination date for Dec. 15.
