Sudbury joins in solidarity to remember the countless people injured, sickened or killed on the job

In honour of the International Day of Mourning, Sudbury's political leaders and community members joined in solidarity at Laurentian University's Fraser Auditorium this morning for the countless workers killed, injured or who have become ill as a result of workplace hazard.

The Sudbury and District Labour Council has been taking a day to remember the victims of workplace tragedies for more than 35 years, an event that inspired a now globally recognized day of remembrance.

"The International Day of Mourning is a day to remember the maximum sacrifice they have been forced to make in order to earn a living, a day to renew approaches to government or tougher occupational health and safety standards or more effective compensation. A day to re-dedicate ourselves to the goal of making Canada's workplaces safer," said Mayor Brian Bigger in his address.

The Steelworkers Local 6500 union also held an invitation-only event this afternoon in honour of the International Day of Mourning.
