There were more police officers than usual around the Riocan Centre Saturday, but they weren't there due to a collision or crime spree.
For the 10th year, a number of Greater Sudbury Police Service officers, along with volunteers from other police services, correction officers, and police foundations students, were out to collect funds for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Toll.
To date, the event has raised more than $190,000 for Special Olympics Ontario.
Greater Sudbury Police Sgt. Joanne Pendrak, the police service's torch run director, said she expects to raise more than $23,000 for the cause this year.
“I can't say enough about the Sudbury community,” Pendrak said. “We have a huge bond with this community, and they have been just unbelievable over the years.”
Many Saturday shoppers lined up to hand over their donations to volunteers, including many special Olympians, scattered throughout various parking lots.
Special Olympian Cheryl Bruce said the donations allow her – and her friends – to pursue their passions.
Bruce Plays basketball, floor hockey, does powerlifting, swims and bowls.
She said she has trouble choosing a favourite activity. “I like them all,” she said.
