Greater Sudbury police shot a man with both a “less-lethal firearm” and a firearm this afternoon, resulting in what they report in a media release as non life-threatening injuries.
Police were called to the scene at approximately noon today, in response to a report of an armed, barricaded man in a Jean Street residence in Sudbury’s Donovan neighbourhood.
A Feeney Warrant was applied for and issued, which allowed police entry to the residence.
Negotiators made "multiple attempts to communicate with the male, however, he was not co-operative,” police said.
The GSPS Emergency Response Unit entered the residence at approximately 3 p.m.
“During interactions with the aggressive armed male, officers discharged a less-lethal firearm and a firearm resulting in non-life-threatening injuries to the armed male,” according to the media release.
“The male was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. Officers were also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”
From the information Greater Sudbury police released, it’s unclear the nature or extent of the officers’ injuries.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) will be investigating the incident.
As such, GSPS noted in their media release that they are “prohibited by legislation from providing any further information related to this incident.”
The SIU will be on the scene investigating the matter.
