Thanks to the work of a volunteer at Greater Sudbury Police Service's storefront in Capreol, a woman in medical distress got the help she needed.

The police's storefronts offer a Friendly Call Program, where volunteers call vulnerable individuals on a regular basis to check on their well-being and inform them of community programs, services and news.

On May 2, a man named Bob who volunteers at the Capreol storefront called Charlotte, a Friendly Call Program registrant.

During their conversation, Bob could tell that Charlotte sounded different and that she was having difficulty breathing. Bob offered her assistance, but she indicated that she was okay.

Upon getting off of the phone with Charlotte, Bob felt uneasy about her condition and called the emergency contact listed on her Friendly Call Program registration form.

Charlotte’s emergency contact and neighbour ran over to her home to check on her, and immediately contacted Emergency Medical Services. Charlotte was taken to Health Sciences North, where the doctor confirmed that she had a heart attack and required immediate medical attention.

Charlotte spent a few days in the hospital and has now returned home to continue her recovery.

The concern and actions of Bob ultimately lead to the dispatch of EMS and timely arrival at HSN where Charlotte received much needed medical assistance.

This week, Greater Sudbury Police presented Bob with the Work of Heart Award. This award is presented to volunteer members in recognition of their inspiring commitment to the Greater Sudbury Police Service Volunteer Program and our community.

Those interested in becoming a volunteer are asked to visit the police service's website, and click on jobs and opportunities, and then volunteers.
