More than 13 kilometres of Highway 535 near Noelville is being reconstructed to strengthen the northern transportation network by reducing maintenance demands and making the road safer for families, businesses and tourists who visit the area, according to the province.

“Our investment in the Northern Highways Program ensures that vital transportation links are expanded and improved for local residents, visitors and industries, while continuing to create good jobs for northerners,” said Minister of Northern Development and Mines Michael Gravelle. “This project will improve traffic flow in the French River area, and I’m pleased that we were able to support this project.”

“Our government is improving infrastructure across the province, which creates jobs and strengthens our economy,” said Glen Murray, minister of Infrastructure and minister of Transportation Projects. “This will help ensure our roads and bridges are safe and in good condition for years to come.”

Bonnechere Excavating Limited has been awarded the $8.4-million contract for the project, which begins this spring.

Last summer, the province reconstructed more than 16 kilometres of Highway 535 between St. Charles and Hagar.

Since 2003, the province has improved 2,560 kilometres of highway and 185 bridges, and constructed 105 kilometres of new four-lane highway along with 115 new bridges throughout Northern Ontario.
