With several potential changes proposed for winter sidewalk maintenance, the city is seeking the public’s feedback on options.

Based on feedback gathered from the community in 2021, the city has drafted five winter sidewalk maintenance options they’re asking residents to rank in order of preference:

  1. Begin sidewalk plowing at 5 cm instead of 8 cm of snow accumulation — this option is anticipated to cost the city an additional $1 million, or a $14 per year increase on the average residential property tax amount.
  2. Priority sidewalk winter maintenance on non-residential, main routes —this option is anticipated to cost approximately $140,000, or a $2 per year increase on the average residential property tax amount.
  3. 24/7 sidewalk winter maintenance — this option is anticipated to cost approximately $3 million, or a $42 per year increase on the average residential property tax amount.
  4. Private/public partnership for sidewalk winter maintenance — this option has no increase in cost and a potential positive budget impact.
  5. No changes — no cost.

A summary of the feedback along with the preferred options, associated financial impacts and recommendations will be presented to the operations committee of council by June.

Using this feedback, the city will prepare any required business cases for consideration as part of 2024 budget talks.
