Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) has reported 10 new cases of COVID-19 in the area as of March 9. This is a significant drop from the 34 cases reported on Monday.

PHSD also said there are now 211 active cases being actively monitored. This is again the highest number of active cases in Sudbury since COVID-19 tracking began a year ago.

Also, since the pandemic was declared in March 2020, there have been 828 total COVID-19 cases reported to the Sudbury health unit. PHSD said 617 of those cases have been resolved locally.

As to where the new cases might have occurred, the PHSD daily update page reported that 10 cases were found to have occurred within the Greater Sudbury Area.

With respect to possible causes of the new cases, PHSD reported 10 cases as "under investigation”.

PHSD also reports general demographics each day to provide basic information on the people who are becoming infected. This shows that the majority of cases are people in the 20 to 39 age category, with 293 total cases. The increase in the past 24 hours was six and two cases respectively.

Next highest number was 207 cases for the 19 and under age group (one new case).

The next highest case number after that was 169 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (one new case).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group counted 95 cases total and people aged 80 and over were the lowest category with 61 cases.

Variants of concern

PHSD is also reporting there are still only three cases of "confirmed" variants of the COVID-19 virus.

This hasn't changed from previous days. There are however, 97 cases that are "screened positive" for variants of concern. This is a minor increase over the 95 cases reported Sunday. PHSD said additional time is required to genetically sequence the virus in a positive sample and confirm it as a COVID-19 variant of concern.

Also, the outbreak at Sudbury Developmental Services (Congregate living setting) has been declared as being over.

At Sudbury's Health Sciences North there is one patient in the hospital confirmed with COVID-19 for today March 9. There are no COVID patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There are five additional admitted patients currently being investigated for COVID-19 at this time. One of those patients is in the ICU, while four patients are in other units at HSN.

On the provincial COVID-19 roster today, the Ontario government daily website reported there were 1,185 new confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province. Also today, the province reported 22 new deaths had occurred in the previous 24 hours.
