Public Health Sudbury reports two new COVID-19 cases for Aug. 4

Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) has reported two new cases of COVID-19 in the local jurisdiction for Aug. 4. The health unit is also reporting there are now seven active cases being monitored.  

Also, since the PHSD began tracking COVID-19 cases just over 17 months ago, there have been 2,186 total COVID-19 cases confirmed locally. PHSD also said 2,179 of those cases are now resolved. 

There are also now 999 cases that are "confirmed or presumed to be" for variants of concern. No increase since the last report on Tuesday.  

The details were outlined on the PHSD website.

In terms of where the new cases might have occurred, PHSD said there were two new cases in the Manitoulin district. 

With respect to the possible causes, HSD reported one new case related to close contact of a confirmed case, and one instance of no known epidemiological link.

PHSD also reported general demographics each day about the people who are becoming infected.  

Epidemiological data showed that the majority of local cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 716 total cases (no increase).

The next highest group number was 547 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (no increase).

The next highest number was 523 cases for the 19 and under age group (no increase).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group amounted to 302 cases total (no increase). 

People aged 80 and over are currently the lowest category with 95 cases (no increase).

There were two additional cases assigned to the "not specified" category, which now has three cases total. 

With respect to COVID-19 testing, 269,595 tests have been performed in the PHSD region; an increase of 346 since the last testing results on Tuesday.

As for local vaccinations, PHSD reported a cumulative total of 235,995 vaccines given in the entire PHSD area. There are also 105,859 local residents who are now fully vaccinated.  

PHSD has also reported there are no current outbreaks declared in any local settings.

Also, at Sudbury's Health Sciences North, as of Aug. 4 there are two patients with confirmed COVID-19 at the hospital, said the HSN website. Both patients are in the Intensive Care Unit. In addition to this there are nine admitted patients "being tested" for COVID-19. HSN said none of the patients being tested has been admitted to the ICU at this time.

On the provincial COVID-19 register today, the Ontario government daily website reported 139 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province. Also today, the province reported 11 new deaths** had occurred in the past 24 hours. **NOTE: Due to a data clean-up, seven of the deaths being reported today by Ontario Public Health occurred between December 2020 and February 2021.
