Public Health Sudbury reports two new COVID-19 deaths, 156 new cases in April 27 report

There are three COVID-19 outbreaks at the hospital and 475 current active cases in Sudbury

Two new deaths have been reported in the city. There are also 49 COVID-19 patients at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, with four of those patients in the Intensive Care Unit.

Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) reported two new deaths and that in both cases, COVID-19 was identified as the underlying cause of death. The total number of deaths in the local jurisdiction since the pandemic began in March of 2020 is now 137.  

PHSD also reported there were 156 new COVID-19 cases in the local health jurisdiction on Wednesday. 

These numbers are for the past two days since the health unit does not report statistics on Tuesdays. 

PHSD also reported that 14,778 total accumulated cases have occurred in the Sudbury jurisdiction since the pandemic was declared in March of 2020. PHSD also reported that 14,303 of those cases have been resolved. This means there are currently 475 known active cases in the health unit area.

With respect to the possible locations of the new cases, PHSD said 123 new cases were reported to have occurred in the Greater Sudbury area, 26 new cases in the rural Sudbury district and seven new cases for the Manitoulin district. 

PHSD also reported general demographics each day about the age groups for people who are becoming infected.

Epidemiological data showed that the majority of local cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 5,243 total cases (An increase of 39 cases).

The next highest number was 3,920 for the 40-59 age group (An increase of 47).

There were also 2,639 cases for the 19 and under age group (An increase of 13).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group amounted to 2,024 cases total (An increase of 36). 

People aged 80 and over are currently the lowest category with 942 cases (An increase of 21).

In the Not Specified category, there were 10 cases (No change).

With respect to COVID-19 testing, PHSD said there have been 421,862 total tests carried out locally since the pandemic began; an increase of 681 since testing was carried out Monday. 

With respect to vaccination numbers, PHSD is now reporting percentages of people vaccinated rather than doses given. The percentage of area residents who are now fully vaccinated translates to 81.7 per cent of all people in the PHSD area. 

The Sudbury health unit is reporting a number of outbreaks in the city at several long-term care homes and congregate living homes in the city. There are 10 active outbreaks as of April 27, including three outbreaks at the hospital. More details can be found on the daily COVID summary page. Also, at Sudbury's Health Sciences North, there were 49 patients with confirmed COVID-19 at the hospital, the hospital website reported Wednesday. Four of those COVID patients were in the intensive care unit. There were 11 other patients being investigated (tested) for COVID-19. None were in the ICU. HSN also said there are three active COVID-19 outbreaks at the hospital, North Tower sixth floor and North Tower fourth floor as of April 20; and at 5 Kirkwood Place as of April 26. 

On the provincial COVID-19 roster today, the Ontario government daily website reported 3,005 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province. The province also reported 211 COVID patients are in intensive care. Also today, the province reported 22 COVID-19 deaths.
