Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) has reported that there are 13 new cases of COVID-19 in the area.

PHSD also said there are now 211 active cases being actively monitored. This is the same number reported by PHSD on Tuesday. This remains the highest number of active cases in Sudbury since COVID-19 tracking began a year ago.

There has also been one new death reported by the health authorities, bringing the local total since tracking began to 15 deaths.

"Public Health Sudbury & Districts is reporting a COVID-19-related death in Greater Sudbury. Public Health Sudbury & Districts offers sincere condolences to the family, and friends affected by this loss and throughout this difficult time. Out of respect, no further details will be provided," said a PHSD news release. No other details were provided.

Also, since the pandemic was declared in March 2020, there have now been 841 total COVID-19 cases reported to the Sudbury health unit. PHSD said 630 of those cases have been resolved locally.

As to where the new cases might have occurred, the PHSD daily update page reported that 13 cases were found to have occurred within the Greater Sudbury Area.

With respect to possible causes of the new cases, PHSD reported 22 cases as "under investigation. Six cases were reported as related to outbreaks. Twenty six cases were reported as close contact of a confirmed case. These numbers do not correspond with the daily case count because PHSD chooses to report case causes at different times in an effort to preserve the privacy of individuals.

PHSD also reports general demographics each day to provide basic information on the people who are becoming infected. This shows that the majority of cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 293 total cases.

The next highest number was 211 cases for the 19 and under age group (four new cases).

The  next highest number was 174 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (five new cases).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group had only 98 cases total (three new cases), and people aged 80 and over were the lowest category with 61 cases (zero increase) and one new case where the age was not specified.

VARIANTS:

PHSD is also reporting there are still only three cases of "confirmed" variants of the COVID-19 virus.

This hasn't changed in several days. There are however, 107 cases that have "screened positive" for variants of concern. This is an increase of 10 over the 97 cases reported Tuesday. PHSD said additional time is required to genetically sequence the virus in a positive sample and confirm it as a COVID-19 variant of concern.

At Sudbury's Health Sciences North there are two patients in the hospital confirmed with COVID-19 for today, Wednesday March 10, 2021. There are no COVID patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There are six additional admitted patients currently being investigated for COVID-19 at this time. One of those patients is in the ICU, while four patients are in other units at HSN.

On the provincial COVID-19 roster today, the Ontario government daily website reported there were 1,316 new confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province. Also today, the province reported 16 new deaths had occurred in the previous 24 hours.
