Katie Yao, a Grade 12 student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, will serve as student trustee on the Rainbow District School Board for the 2016-2017 school year. She was sworn in at the board meeting on Aug. 30.

As student trustee, Yao will represent Sudbury and the Rainbow District School Board at the provincial level. She was recently elected Operations Officer on the Executive Council of the Ontario Student Trustee Association.

Actively involved in Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School since Grade 9, Yao has been a member of the junior basketball team, junior jazz band, the badminton team, School Council and Student Council.

She has also participated in many school events. Her term as Student Council Co-President last year enabled her to contribute to positive changes at the school.

Yao said she looks forward to representing the student voice at a different level in her role as a Student Trustee.

“I am honoured to have to opportunity to bring a unique and diverse perspective to the Board table on behalf of students,” she said. “As Chair of the Student Senate, I am also excited to be able to lead a group of enthusiastic students from all of the Board’s secondary schools as we work together on exciting initiatives.”

Yao plans to pursue post-secondary studies in the field of medicine or business.
