Officials who have the final word on the future of Wembley Public School will receive two key documents at a meeting of the Rainbow District School Board on Monday, Sept. 22.

Board trustees, who will decide Wembley's fate at the board meeting on Nov. 17, will be handed reports by the accommodation review committee and administrative council.

The public is welcome to attend the meeting in the auditorium of Lockerby Composite School at 6:30 p.m.

The red brick school on Wembley Street in Sudbury's south end, labelled prohibitive to repair by the Ministry of Education in 2004, has been the subject of an accommodation review.

The accommodation review committee is made up of the school principal, a teacher, the school superintendent, a business leader, a municipal employee and two parents/guardians from the school council.

"The accommodation review committee will look at the value of the school to the students, the community, the school board and the local economy in accordance with Ministry guidelines," the Board's website explains.

"The ARC will develop options for student accommodation which will maximize student learning within the resources available to the Board. It will present its findings and recommendations to the Board's administrative council."

The administrative council is made up of director of education Jean Hanson, superintendent of business Diane Cayen-Arnold and school superintendents Fred Law, Norm Blaseg, Lesleigh Dye and Sharon Speir.

One of the reports - the ARC report - has already been posted on the Board website at http://www.rainbowschools.ca/boardroom/accommodation/Wembley.php.

The committee recommended the board build an addition on Princess Anne Public School to accommodate all Princess Anne and Wembley students on one site.

The board will hear public input about the accommodation review at its regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 at 6:30 p.m., spokesperson Nicole Charette said in an e-mail.

The meeting will take place in the council chambers at Tom Davies Square.

Members of the public wanting to speak at the meeting must follow the guidelines posted at http://www.rainbowschools.ca/boardroom/delegations.php. One of the guidelines is that they must apply in writing 10 days before the meeting.

Public presentations must be made in accordance with the by-laws posted at: http://www.rainbowschools.ca/boardroom/delegations.php.

For those unable to attend the meeting, written input will be accepted, Charette said. Send written submissions, clearly identifying the accommodation area as Wembley Public School, to:
Rainbow District School Board, Corporate Communications and Strategic Planning, 69 Young St., Sudbury, Ont. P3E 3G5. E-mail [email protected] or fax 705-674-8651.

The final meeting on Nov. 17 will be also be held in the council chambers at Tom Davies Square. It will start at 6:30 p.m.

Charette noted any changes that may be approved would take effect in September 2009 at the earliest.

Kirk Dopson, parent of a student at Wembley and critic of the review, hopes members of the public will turn out for the meetings. "We only have two more kicks at the can to show support," he said.
