A rally against the closure of the Sudbury Women's Centre will be held Oct. 6 at 6 p.m.

The protest will be held at the non-profit agency's location, at 324-F Elm St. West.

According to a press release from the organizers of the rally, the only two staff at the centre, executive director Rose Menard and program co-ordinator Barb Garon, returned from vacation shut down period Sept. 7, only to be told they had been laid off for financial reasons.

The doors to the centre were also closed, and the locks had been changed.

The press release said the Sudbury Women's Centre was not facing a financial crisis, as it had received several grants this year.

It also makes several allegations against the centre's executive board, saying, among other things, that they haven't held elections, which is mandated under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and have silenced staff and members of the agency.

The press release also said Menard and Garon have not been provided with their Record of Employment, which is against labour law.

The Sudbury Women's Centre is a non-profit feminist agency which has served women and children in the community since 1981.

It offers information, referrals, short-term crisis intervention, legal-aid clinics, a resource library, a children’s play room, computer and internet access and a clothing boutique.

The press release invites the public to join the “Friends of the Sudbury Women's Centre de Femmes” Facebook group by searching for the term.
