Grade 7 and 8 students from the Rainbow District School Board and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board competed in the event April 28, which was held at Lasalle Secondary School.

The winning team will go on to compete at the Ontario Mathematics Olympiad (OMO) in Windsor on June 8-9.

Marymount Academy garnered the silver medal in the competition, and Carl A. Nesbitt Public School took away the bronze.

Marymount's team, however, was considered an exhibition team because it was made up of all girls, instead of two girls and two boys, and did not qualify to go onto the provincial math competition.

Therefore, R.L. Beattie Public School and Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will move on to the Ontario Mathematics Olympiad (OMO).

The Mathematics Olympics was hosted by the Northern Ontario Mathematics Association (NOMA), a group of educators who volunteer their time and energy to support math education. NOMA is the local chapter of the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education.

“The Sudbury Regional Mathematics Olympics gave students an opportunity to use their mathematical skills in a fun way,” NOMA president Cheryl Geoghegan said, in a press release.

“It was great to see so many students on a Saturday morning happy and excited to do math. This event fostered a sense of team work, an appreciation for mathematics, and an opportunity for collaboration, competition and camaraderie for each participant.”

NOMA will cover all registration and accommodation fees for the gold medallists and registration fees for the second qualifying team.

“We wish our Sudbury mathletes all the best at the Ontario Mathematics Olympiad,” Geoghegan said.
