The Sudbury Meals on Wheels had a special delivery-man yesterday, March 24.

Greater Sudbury mayor John Rodriguez participated in the Mayors for Meals day to show support for the city's senior citizens.

As part of the event, the mayor assisted Meals on Wheels in delivering its 'hot meal' program to enrolled citizens.

"We are excited about having the Honourable Mayor Rodriguez participate in our event," Colleen Fraser, administrative manager, said in a press release. "We hope to raise awareness of the value this service provides to clients in our community."

The Sudbury Meals on Wheels serves seniors in Sudbury, Walden, Azilda, Chelmsford, the Valley, Skead, Wahnipitae, Cartier, and has an affiliated group in Killarney. The group serves about 26,000 meals per year.

"Our mayor and city councillors have been involved with our program in the past, and the International Mayors for Meals Day is an excellent way to continue our relationship," Fraser said.

The Mayors for Meals event is celebrating its second year in Greater Sudbury and at other Meals on Wheels chapters in Canada. The event has been run for several years now at Meals on Wheels chapters in the United States.
