The Rotary Sunrisers of Sudbury sold just under 10,000 tickets during its annual Lucky Duck Dash to help support local organizations.

On July 8, five groups from Sudbury received $6,600 each from the Sunrisers at a breakfast conference. The Sudbury Therapeutic Riding Program, ParkSide Older Adult Centre, Pet Save, Northern Cancer Research Foundation and Rotary Park all benefited from the contest.

Jill Pessot, director of Pet Save, said she is “very appreciative” of the money, and that it came at a really critical time for the organization.

“Because of the local economy, we've suffered twice the workload and twice the demand on our organization this year over last year,” Pessot said.

She said the money will go a long way in reducing Sudbury's pet over-population problem.

“For us, it means thousands of lives saved,” she said. “The initial donation helps dozens of animals, but long term, what the donation means is hundreds more litters will be prevented from being born.”

Along with donating funds to local organizations, the Lucky Duck Dash also featured a draw with a grand prize of $10,000 cash.

At the fundrasier held at Rotary Park on May 15, Deb Sullivan from Hanmer took home the grand prize.
