Safe Ride Home Sudbury put a capper on another successful holiday season of helping people get home safely from Christmas festivities.

On New Year’s Eve alone, Safe Ride Home Sudbury volunteers provided 80 rides to 161 people and travelled some 2,393 kilometres.

Over the 10 nights the service operates during the Christmas season, volunteers provided safe rides to 795 people, responded to 410 calls for service and drove some 13,310 kilometres to get people home.

“Organizers note that the call volume was down somewhat from past years, but are not sure if this was due to COVID concerns and response to higher entertainment costs associated with inflation or whether it represents a longer-term trend in social behaviour,” Safe Ride Home said in a news release.

“Safe Ride Home Sudbury would like to thank the dedicated volunteers, both individual and from

work groups, who rallied to the cause. The service would have been impossible without them.”

Other community partners that were thanked include Greater Sudbury Police Service and the business sponsors who helped fund the service.

“Finally, thanks to each and every person who made the responsible choice to call for a Safe Ride Home.”
