Cambrian College received $3.25 million from the province Friday to add programs and buy equipment.
It will spend more than $150,000 on programs for Métis and aboriginal students and $100,000 to help students who are the first in their family to receive post-secondary education.
Aboriginal students also benefitted from new provincial funding given to Laurentian University.
The school got about $240,000 to help the students improve their writing skills and encourage them to study social work, nursing and education.
Officials from both schools thanked Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci, who made the funding announcement.
“It’s wonderful to have a government that realizes a college education is just as important as a university program,” said Cambrian president Sylvia Barnard.
Denis Mayer, associate vice-president of student affairs at Laurentian, added, “We know you carry the torch for us at Queen’s Park.”
