A scene from a multi-vehicle motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Martindale Road and Regent Street at approximately 9:10 p.m. on Feb. 21.

Update at 1:15 p.m. on Feb. 22:

Sudbury.com reached out to the Special Investigations Unit for additional insight on Wednesday night's motor vehicle collision, whose spokesperson answered some of our questions.

Greater Sudbury police witnessed someone driving a GMC pickup truck northbound on Regent Street at a "high rate of speed," and followed the vehicle, according to the spokesperson.

At Regent Street's intersection with Martindale Road, the pickup truck was involved in a collision with two other vehicles.

The driver of one of these vehicles, a 30-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The SIU spokesperson left some of Sudbury.com's questions unanswered, including the following: How many people were in each vehicle? Which people reported injuries? How fast was the driver going? Have any charges been laid? What was the age and sex of the suspect?

The SIU has three investigators assigned to the case.

Original Story:

Greater Sudbury Police had just attempted to conduct a traffic stop when the motorist sped up and proceeded to crash at the intersection Martindale Road and Regent Street on Wednesday evening.

The incident resulted in serious injuries to one of the motorists, who was taken to hospital, according to Greater Sudbury Police Service spokesperson Sarah Kaelas.

Just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, a Greater Sudbury Police officer was travelling northbound on Regent Street when he saw a motorist driving at a high rate of speed, according to the spokesperson.

“The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, however, the motorist continued to accelerate,” Kaelas noted.

Moments later, the vehicle was involved in a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Martindale Road and Regent Street.

The intersection was closed for approximately six hours while police, Greater Sudbury Fire Services and Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services remained on scene.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate and will be investigating the incident.

As such, the GSPS spokesperson noted they are prohibited by legislation from providing any further information related to the incident.
