Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré is encouraging Sudburians to take some time today to celebrate seniors, as Oct. 1 marks National Seniors Day.

“Seniors have shaped our country and paved the way for generations to come. So many seniors have spent a lifetime in service to others and continue to make significant and invaluable contributions to their families, our communities and society," said Serré in a news release.

"I see these contributions first hand right here in Nickel Belt-Greater Sudbury where so many dedicated seniors are donating their time by volunteering and helping our community grow, thrive and prosper.”

On National Seniors Day, the federal government reiterates its commitment and ongoing efforts to empower Canadian seniors and better understand their needs.

“The passing of my motion M-106, calling on the government to develop and implement a National Seniors Strategy, the appointment of a new seniors Minister, and the New Horizons for Seniors funding program benefiting numerous organizations in our community like Club Alidor in St. Charles and the Lockerby Legion Branch 564, are examples of how we are ensuring seniors get the support they need and deserve,” said Serré.

“Since 2015, we have also enhanced the Canada Pension Plan, lowered the age of eligibility for Old Age Security benefits from 67 to 65, boosted the Guaranteed Income Supplement by nearly $1,000 a year for vulnerable seniors and improved EI caregiver benefits to make it easier for Canadians to care for a family member in need.

“Today and every day, I encourage all Canadians to say thank you and recognize the seniors in their life – parents, grandparents, mentors, role models, teachers, friends and neighbours – for everything they have done, and continue to do for our communities. I also encourage you all to support the local organizations that care for our seniors and ensure they have the services and assistance they deserve.”
