Arena location decision expected to be a close vote:

Tuesday's vote by city council on where the new arena/events centre is shaping up to be a close one, with some on council having already declared their intentions and others keeping voters in suspense. The latest councillor to take a public stand is Ward 2 Coun. Michael Vagnini, who came out in support of The Kingsway over downtown for the $80 million to $100 million facility. Strike deadline looms at LCBO stores

There was no word early Sunday evening from the bargaining table as negotiators from the province and OPSEU faced a midnight strike deadline at the LCBO. Stores in Sudbury and across the province have been open for extended hours since Thursday, anticipating a surge in sales in case of a labour disruption. The 8,000 unionized LCBO workers, who have been without a contract since March 31, voted 93 per cent in favour of a strike in April.

 

Horwath will attend Sudbury NDP nomination meeting tonight

The three people running to represent Ontario's New Democrats in the next provincial election will have a special guest at their nomination meeting Monday. Party Leader Andrea Horwath announced Sunday she'll attend and speak at the meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Cambrian College Student Centre. 

 

Decision in complicated sex crime case expected Thursday

A decision in a complicated sex crime case is expected to be handed down Thursday in Greater Sudbury. Paul McColeman, 45, is facing 34 charges including communication for the purpose of child prostitution, luring children, sexual exploitation and indecent exposure involving 17 male minors from 2006 to late June 2014 in Espanola. He allegedly set up fake social media accounts to lure victims. McColeman's trial began in March and lasted 23 days. Because of the complexity of the case, Superior Court Justice Patricia Henessey delayed her decision until June 29.
