Seven Sudbury students are heading to the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa May 26-31.

Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School student Zavier Simard was awarded best in fair for his project “VAWT to WATT: Capturing Wind Energy on Cars” during the 2024 Sudbury Regional Science Fair, which took place April 6-7.

A select group of judges reviewed the top projects in the fair, ultimately selecting seven students who will represent Sudbury at the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) in Ottawa May 26 to 31.

Besides Simard, these students include Ben Kawa, Felix Naghi, Eden Abols, Jack O’Connell, Violet Simon and Camille Landry.

A full list of the fair’s award winners is available online here.

"We are delighted that the projects selected to represent Sudbury at the Canada-Wide Science Fair are from Rainbow District School Board," said Rainbow board director of education Bruce Bourget, in a press release.

"The young scientists from Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School earned the honour of showcasing their discoveries on the national stage and we are certainly very proud of them for their outstanding achievement. We also thank our staff for their tremendous leadership and support of our students."

For almost 55 years, students in grades 7 to 12 from the Sudbury area have been exploring and discovering science through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) projects.

They share their work at school, school board, and regional science fairs.

Each year, top students bring projects to the regional science fair, showcasing science experiments, studies, and innovative endeavours that have taken weeks, and sometimes even months, of effort.

This year, the Sudbury Regional Science Fair took place at the Cliff Fielding Research, Innovation, and Engineering Building at Laurentian University.

Forty-seven professional scientists and engineers from the community judged the projects. After two rounds of judging, they selected the divisional and special award winners.

SRSF successfully judged 46 projects involving 63 participants from the Greater Sudbury region.

These students represented the Rainbow District School Board, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, and the Conseil Solaire catholique Nouvelon.

The projects, which showcased a variety of scientific initiatives, were judged by professional scientists throughout the day on April 6, a very important component of the regional science fair. The judging resulted in winners for 22 divisional awards, seven honorable mentions and 46 special awards.

The regional fair culminated with the award ceremony in the Fraser Auditorium at Laurentian University on Sunday, April 7.

During this event, it was announced which students would represent our region at this year’s Canada-Wide Science Fair, hosted by the City of Ottawa from May 26 to 31.

The Sudbury Regional Science Fair Committee extends its congratulations to all the participants and winners of the 2024 Sudbury Regional Science Fair.

Additionally, the ceremony serves as an opportunity to express gratitude to the sponsors and donors who make it possible for the SRSF to continue providing an engaging science experience for local students.
