Press Release

NDP candidate Suzanne Shawbonquit hammered in her first campaign sign in her bid for the provincial byelection Feb. 5.

Three days after her nomination, Shawbonquit said in a news release she has knocked on more than 100 doors, and the NDP campaign has lined up more than 300 locations for campaign signs — and numbers continue to grow.

“It’s cold outside, but I’m feeling the energy and the warmth from Sudburians,” said Shawbonquit in a press release. “Our campaign has hit the ground running. People who have never voted NDP before are telling me that they’ve been taken for granted by the Liberals, and they deserve better. New Democrats have a strong Northern team that’s been listening to people in Sudbury and speaking up for them at Queen’s Park.”

Shawbonquit said that one of the big issues she is hearing at the door from Sudbury families is that they want to see the kinds of jobs that can support a family, and the kind of jobs that will keep people in Sudbury.

“Forty-nine families learned that they are losing a paycheque at First Nickel. This comes at a bad time for families in the Nickel City,” said Shawbonquit. “With the Liberals, Sudbury is going to get the same old status quo on jobs. New Democrats are going to speak up not just to protect northern jobs, but create the kinds of jobs that support a family. Andrea Horwath and the NDP Northern Team are the only ones people can trust to speak up for good Sudbury jobs."

The most recent Statistics Canada figures show that 5,000 people in Sudbury are looking for work.
