The Sudbury Horticultural Society and its partners will be bringing the eighth annual Seedy Saturday to the Parkside Older Adult Centre in downtown Sudbury March 3.

The event gets underway with special guest speaker Steve Bacon from Four Season Greens in Huntsville, who will be presenting a workshop on how to grow your own sprouts from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The seed exchange and the rest of the event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Never been to a seed exchange before? All across North America, seed exchanges allow gardeners and farmers to exchange or buy organic, local, and heirloom seed varieties. This helps to save the older seed varieties that have not been genetically modified.

The seed exchange emphasizes food varieties such as vegetables and herbs, but there will also be a wide range of flower seeds.

Admission is by donation and this year there are even more exhibitors and seed vendors who will be displaying their products, programs and services. There will be expanded seed swap tables, as well as children’s activities for the youngsters.

The event organizers are working to help saving some rare and endangered seed varieties.

"You can have your say by voting for one of three seed varieties to save this year," said a news release from Sudbury and District Community Garden Network.

"We have saved numerous varieties and helped maintain bio-diversity through our efforts over the last eight years."

The Sudbury Horticultural Society and Master Gardeners will be on site to answer your gardening questions.
