4:37 p.m. update

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service sent the following update:

*************************
Officers with the Traffic Services Division of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are currently at the scene of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian at the North West corner of the parking lot at 293 Bay Street.

At approximately 12:15 p.m. today, a single motor vehicle with two occupants was travelling eastbound in the parking lot on the West side of the building. As the vehicle travelled towards the building it failed to stop and struck the north west side of the building.

The vehicle then continued on the walkway on the north side of the building and struck a pedestrian and then two parked motor vehicles.  As a result, the pedestrian was extracted from under one of the parked motor vehicles by Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services.

The pedestrian was taken from the scene by EMS and transported to hospital with life threatening injuries.

A short time later, the pedestrian, a 58 year old female from Sault Ste. Marie succumbed to her injuries.

At this time officers with the Traffic Services Division will remain on the scene and the investigation is continuing.

Original story: 2:53 p.m.

A pedestrian exiting Walmart South, located at the west end of the Station Mall, was struck by a vehicle and transported to hospital "with major injuries," said city police Acting Sergeant Nikki Magna today.

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and mall security redirected parking lot traffic and taped off a 700-square-meter area as police officers, including the department's Forensic Services Unit, investigated the incident.

A dented, green Ford station wagon was parked within the confines of the police tape and was identified by Magna as being the vehicle involved in the collision.

Sandals, groceries, and a shopping cart were scattered on the ground near the station wagon and Magna said they belonged to the pedestrian who was struck.

SooToday will update this story with more information should it become available.
