The snow which fell on Greater Sudbury April 12 will lead to an increase in water levels and flows once it melts, a press release from the Nickel District Conservation Authority.

“The current Environment Canada five-day forecast indicates that by early next week, we could experience daytime temperatures in the range of five to 10 degrees, with possible rain and chance of showers,” the press release said.

“The current and possible future conditions for early next week must be closely monitored by all residents living in known hazard areas. At this time, no flooding problems have been reported to the NDCA.”

The larger river systems, namely the Vermilion, Wanapitei and Onaping, should be monitored by residents living in these areas, as flows are gradually beginning to increase.

“Public safety is the number one priority,” the press release said. “The fast-flowing, cold water must be avoided. Creek and river banks will be very slippery and unsafe, especially with the new snow cover, and must be avoided. Ice at the edge of lakes must also be avoided.”
