The annual Sock It To The Homeless campaign by DeSimone Foot & Ankle Centre was a big success, organizers have said.
The campaign ran from May 1-30, and with community support, brought in 2,126 new pairs of socks and 345 pairs of gently used footwear.
“Many homeless people walk several kilometres a day to access food, shelter and essentials; accessing help is easier when your feet are healthy and free of blisters,” the centre said in a news release. “Wet socks can breed bacteria, which can cause painful infections that make accessing services even more difficult. The drive is our way of giving back to our community.”
DeSimone thanked several schools by name for participating in the campaign, including:
- Ecole Publique Foyer-Jeunesse
- St. Charles College
- Lockerby Composite School Lasalle Secondary School
- Princess Anne Public School
- Algonquin Public School
- Valley View Public School.
