Wasaya Airways eyeballs northeast expansion:

Could Dash 8 service between Sudbury and Thunder Bay become a reality someday soon? “In a word, ‘yes,’” responded Michael Rodyniuk, CEO of Wasaya Airways, who said the Thunder Bay-headquartered regional air carrier is keen to expand service into northeastern Ontario. The First Nations-owned carrier recently announced the launch of double-daily flights between Winnipeg and the northwestern Ontario communities of Sioux Lookout, Sandy Lake First Nation and Pikangikum First Nation, scheduled to begin Aug. 14. Songs of Summer Music Festival starts Friday at noon:

Theatre Cambrian will be hosting its fourth annual Songs of Summer Music Festival this weekend with events in Memorial Park on July 28, Theatre Cambrian on July 29 and Bell Park on July 30. Songs of Summer begins at 12 p.m. in Memorial Park on Friday, July 28 and will run until 10:30 p.m. All events in Memorial Park are free to attend. Donations to Theatre Cambrian will be accepted. Fire Flame Jerk House will be on-site with Caribbean cuisine. Hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza will also be available along with cold drinks. For the full lineup of performers, click here

Science North and SNOLAB launch new exhibit:

Science North and SNOLAB will officially open a new exhibit, "Eyes on the Universe" on July 28. This international and interactive exhibit tells the story of the Nobel Prize winning results from SNO and the current experiments underway at SNOLAB. The official opening will be held today at 1 p.m. inside the lobby of Science North. Be sure to check back with Sudbury.com for more on this story later today.

Making the cut: Sudbury's newest barber shop opens its doors:

Tucked into an unassuming plaza on Lasalle Boulevard is Sudbury's newest, and one of very few, barbershops. Hemlock Barbers was opened on July 25 by Brad Gloster and Mylene Thibeault. The couple have each been cutting hair in Sudbury for more than two years, and the timing was right for them to branch out into the men's hair cutting world. Find the full story here.

'I still can't believe it': Sudburian wins gold at Francophone games:

Sudburian Zach Ouellette didn't come home empty-handed after participating in the Canadian Francophone Games in Moncton, New Brunswick July 11-15. The 17-year-old took part in the games' music competition as part of team Ontario, which clinched the gold in the competition. Held every three years, the games are a gathering of French-speaking Canadian youth where they exercise their talents in one of three sectors — art, leadership and sport. #Canada 150: A look back at Canada's deadliest forest fire:

The flames rolled into Matheson and the surrounding areas without warning. As the smoke choked the streets, men and women blindly attempted to fumble their way to safety. Some were lucky enough to find refuge. Others were not so fortunate. One story claims 16 people sought shelter in a root cellar, only to suffocate to death while the blaze wreaked havoc above them. Another account from survivors says 25 people took cover in a barn; none of them made it out alive. Be sure to check back later today for Mike Commito's column on the 1916 Matheson forest fire.

Contract talks picking up for Northeastern YMCA locations:

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) issued a press release on July 25 with respect to the status of negotiations involving the bargaining unit representing the employees in, Employment Services and Immigrant Services, of the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario. OPSEU was certified as the bargaining agent on July 13, 2016. Notice to bargain a first collective agreement was received from OPSEU, on Oct. 17, 2016. Both parties agreed to commence negotiations on Dec. 12, 2016. Full story can be found here.

HSN begins performing advanced surgery to treat endometriosis:

Women’s health is taking an important step forward in northeastern Ontario, through new surgical techniques being introduced to Health Sciences North (HSN), said a press release from the hospital. HSN has begun performing advanced, laparasopic (minimally invasive) surgery for the treatment of endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of the uterus, causing severe pain and in some cases fertility problems. The new surgical procedures were introduced to HSN through a partnership between Sudbury surgeon Dr. Stephen Morris and Dr. Abheha Satkunaratnam of St. Michael’s and Women’s College hospitals in Toronto.
