Members of the Progressive Conservative Party have cast their ballots in the PC Leadership race.

Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your weekend.

Tories pick their leader today: See what the candidates said in Sudbury:

Members of the Progressive Conservative Party have cast their ballots in the PC Leadership race. The search for a new leader in the province was sparked by the removal of former leader Patrick Brown both from his leadership, and his membership in the party. Four contenders rose to take his place: Doug Ford, Caroline Mulroney, Christine Elliot and Tanya Granic Allen. The last of these four did not campaign in the North, but Sudbury.com covered those who did made a stop in Nickel City. You can watch and listen to what each had to say, here.  Be sure to check back with Sudbury.com when the winner is announced later today.

Daylight Saving Time: You'll lose sleep this weekend, but spring's around the corner!

Spring forward, fall back. This is a friendly reminder, dear readers, to set your clocks ahead an hour before going to bed on Saturday. That's right, spring is less than two weeks away and Daylight Saving Time takes effect this weeked. While DST means brighter evenings, the downside is you lose an hour of sleep Saturday night. The extra daylight comes at a perfect time with March Break around the corner, meaning children and their families will be able to spend more time outdoors. Daylight Saving Time ends Nov. 4 this year.

Letter: Thibeault says report on Windsor PET scanner was 'politically motivated':

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the PET Scanner. Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault responded to the latest buzz about bringing a PET Scanner to Sudbury. In an open letter, Thibeault wrote, "Years of hard work by the Sam Bruno PET Steering Committee, Health Sciences North, and the Northern Cancer Foundation have paid off: the PET Scanner has been purchased, and after very specific plans were drawn up by the Hospital, an RFP has gone out for the construction. In two years as MPP, we’ve delivered a PET Scanner for Sudbury: the government committed $4.6 million in capital funding and $1.6 million/year in ongoing operations. The community raised roughly $4 million for community capital costs." Read Thibeault's full letter here.

Sudbury's Paralympian: Collin Cameron takes aim at gold:

The only athlete Greater Sudbury sent to the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang told Sudbury.com before leaving for Korea that competing is learning: about your sport and yourself. Given that he is only just completing his first full year on the scene, one that would see him capture gold in a World Cup event for the very first time, Collin Cameron likely has very good reason to be optimistic. Even more encouraging, from the standpoint of the Team Canada coaching staff, is his constant thirst for knowledge and improvement. Cameron competed in the 7.5-km biathlon event Friday night. You can check out results from the event here.

Sudbury man upset with $4K firefighting 'bill' he got after house fire:

A city man is angry that he got a bill for more than $4,000 for the costs of city firefighting crews extinguishing a blaze at his home in March 2017. Gord Rowe says he recently got a bill from a company called Fire Marque saying if he didn't pay the bill, the costs would be added to his property tax bill. "We got the invoice ... without any notice from the city whatsoever," Rowe said Thursday. "I immediately turned it over to my adjuster — I'm with Allstate Insurance." While his insurer is willing to pay the bill, Rowe said he thinks it's an unfair form of double taxation. A former employee of Allstate himself, he said he can't understand why his property taxes isn't enough to pay for fire services. More on this story can be found here.

Sudbury District Sports Club has funds to build an indoor sports facility:

The city of Greater Sudbury may be closer to having its own indoor sports facility than it has been in quite some time. The Sudbury District Sports Club (SDSC) has received financial commitment from a private donor to foot the approximately $3 million bill for a sports dome that would house a number of different sports organizations during the winter months. Board members with the SDSC have been in talks with a local school board and are in the proposal process to build the dome on board property. At current, the SDSC is looking at a large dome (200 ft. x 400 ft. and 50 ft. high) that would house a full-size soccer field, and be able to accommodate a number of other sports. Find more on this story here.
