Soup Kitchen serves Mexican feast to welcome 2017

Downtown soup kitchen expects 200 visitors by the end of the day Friday

Visitors to the Blue Door Soup Kitchen on Friday afternoon were treated to a dinner full of Mexican delights to ring in the new year.

The soup kitchen has hosted a dinner ahead of New Year's Eve for several years, but for 2016 they've decided to showcase international cuisine for the first time.

“Our clients are like our second family and we like to go the extra nine yards for them,” said Bob Johnston, who handles public relations for the downtown soup kitchen. “Today we hope they enjoy their Mexican dinner.”

Volunteers from Our Lady of Hope Church were on hand to prepare plates with nachos, fresh vegetables, Mexican rice, wraps and desserts for the guests.

If the Mexican theme proves to be a hit, Johnston said the Blue Door Soup Kitchen might go with a Greek or Chinese food theme next year.
By the end of the afternoon he said the soup kitchen expects to feed around 200 people.
