It’s International Women’s Day today, an annual event to mark the contributions of women to society and to raise awareness about the social, economic and employment barriers still faced by women today.

This morning, the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce is hosting an International Women’s Day breakfast event at Ristorante Verdicchio.

A panel of speakers shared their experiences in business and in life with those in attendance. Panellists include architect Amber Salach, Vale director of refining Jody Kuzenko and Fraser Mine general foreman Jessica Taylor. The event is being moderated by local radio host Mellaney Dahl.

That’s not the only event today in Greater Sudbury.

This evening, the Centre Victoria pour femmes hosts dinner and entertainment at the Caruso Club, noting the 100-year milestone of women getting the right to vote in Canada.

Paying homage to that milestone will be Les Anges de la Campagne, a musical group featuring Louise Lemieux, Patty Dunlop and Rose Neufeld. Lemieux is known for her contributions to music in Northern Ontario, having organized and hosted shows such as the Gospel Music Show in Blind River. Dunlop is known for her role in the group Women in Song, while Neufeld is a gifted accordionist.

Meanwhile, at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto today, the groups Women in Mining Canada, Women in Mining UK, PDAC and Women Who Rock, will host a networking reception entitled 100 Plus Reasons to Celebrate Women in Mining.

The event will highlight 100 women in mining who were recognized this year by the 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining project from Women in Mining UK.
