There will be fewer CBC Sudbury staff on duty to cover and support news coverage in northeastern Ontario.
It was reported on CBC Radio March 27 that between six and eight positions will be cut from the corporation's English-language Sudbury station, and the same number at its sister station in Thunder Bay.
CBC English Services announced Thursday changes to its programming and services in order address significant financial shortfalls. Falling advertising revenues have caused a shortfall of up to $175 million over the near term according to statements by CBC management recently. Up to 800 positions could be terminated across the country in both English and French language operations.
"Spending reductions overall will total approximately $85 million for 2009/10 and will affect 393 full time equivalent  positions across Canada," stated a release from Canada News Wire (CNW).
Reduced staffing will occur in Sudbury, Windsor, Thunder Bay, Quebec City, Moncton, Saint John, Sydney, Corner Brook, Labrador, Gander and Grand Falls.
At press time Northern Life was unable to confirm the number of staff reductions at CBC Sudbury. Unofficial reports indicate as many as seven positions may be terminated in the English-language station.
Despite critical financial constraints, CBC will maintain a commitment to its non-commercial radio service, Canadian television programming in prime time, its regional programming network, its industry-leading broadcast news operations and internet platforms, stated Richard Stursberg.
"Our objective throughout this very difficult exercise has been to protect as best we can the programs and services we provide to Canadians, as well as our most valuable resource, the CBC employees who provide them," stated Stursberg.
