With snowfall anticipated to abate, municipal street-sweeping efforts are slated to begin this week.

City crews and contractors will begin street sweeping in the Ramsey Lake Watershed and high-risk drainage areas, as well as sidewalks in high-pedestrian traffic areas.

These efforts are expected to expand city-wide by mid-April.

“Crews work as quickly as possible to clean up over 3,000 kilometres of roadway in the spring including walkways, medians, boulevards, sidewalks, bridges and roads in a priority manner,” the city said in a media release.

“Roads within the Ramsey Lake drinking water source protection areas are swept at the highest priority followed by major roads in business centres and high traffic areas.”

All paved roads maintained by the municipality, including bridges and bike lanes, are swept each spring. Sidewalks and walkways plowed and sanded during the winter are also swept, as well as hard-surface boulevards and medians.

The city cautioned that it typically takes multiple passes to remove sand and debris, and that it can sometimes be several days between the initial and final passes before a street is complete.

Some noise and dust is unavoidable, and residents are advised against putting leaves, lawn clippings and other debris on roads and sidewalks.

Residents are also asked to avoid parking on streets overnight, and to remove basketball and hockey nets that might obstruct equipment.

Garbage, recycling and green carts should be placed in a visible area that does not interfere with the sweeping process.

Sweeping schedules and completed area updates will be posted each Monday on the city’s website, at greatersudbury.ca/streetsweeping.
