Students registered for Bloodstock 2008

Canadian Blood Services has 18 students registered in Bloodstock 2008.

Canadian Blood Services has 18 students registered in Bloodstock 2008. Bloodstock, which officially kicked off in May, is a donor recruitment initiative focused on encouraging high school and post-secondary students to be involved in recruiting blood donors.

Students who participate in Bloodstock can qualify to be awarded a $1,000 educational bursary which will help cover costs of post-secondary education.

To qualify for a bursary, students must recruit a minimum of 25 people to attend a blood donor clinic anywhere in Canada, between June 30 and September 5, 2008. These education bursaries will be selected by random draw. The draw will take place in September.

Bianca Ferriero de Castro is a Sudbury student participating in this year’s challenge.

“I decided to get involved with Bloodstock because I donate and I feel I should help out a good cause” said Bianca, in a release. “It’s also a way for me to help pay for my post-secondary education.”

Bianca is registered at Trent University in the Concurrent Education program.

Five $1,000 education bursaries have generously been donated by Vale Inco for Bloodstock 2008.

Students who become involved with Bloodstock will be helping to ensure an adequate blood supply is available for those in need over the summer months.

“Donations usually decrease over long weekends and the summer months because people are away or busy with family activities. Meanwhile the demand for blood is constant,” says Steven Tipman, regional director of Canadian Blood Services.

On average, every minute of every day someone in Canada requires blood or blood components. One donation can improve or save up to three lives.
