A Sudbury woman who founded a charity school in Cambodia has been awarded the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers by the office of Governor General David Johnston.

Tammy Durand Pomroy was presented with the honour on April 6, during a gala event at the Caruso Club that raised more than $27,000 for ABCs and Rice.

That's the name of a school in Cambodia which teaches needy children from the ages of four to 16 years old and feeds them a hot meal, often their only nutrition of the day.

ABCs grows its own produce and raises fish to help feed their students’ families as well. This encourages attendance at school, and prevents the children from begging on the streets or working from a very young age.
