About 125 people walked for memories during the Alzheimer Society's annual fundraising event held at the Southridge Mall Feb. 27.

Patricia Montpetit, executive director with the Société Alzheimer Society Sudbury-Manitoulin, said volunteers raised at least $15,000, although a final figure hasn't been totalled yet.

“(The funds raised) stay in the Sudbury-Manitoulin district to support the programs and services that help families who are dealing with a loved one who has dementia,” she said.

According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada’s website, about 420,600 Canadians over 65 years of age have Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

The website also states “the number of people in Canada with dementia is expected to grow by the year 2031 to over 750,000 people.” There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's but “medication is available to treat some of the symptoms.”
